Many conservative and libertarian (read small “l”, “Ron Paul people”) critics of Romney rightly point to his political vacillations and his tendency to blow with the political wind. Although he was certainly not my first, second, third, or even fourth choice in the recent primary/caucus, my view of his tendency to migrate in the direction of the strongest political wind was that this is actually an OPPORTUNITY for those of us in the “Restore” movement–if only we would quit hating on the guy for whatever our individual beefs may be, however legitimate those beefs are.

Instead of dwelling on the man’s past, we need to look at what we can drive him to do in the FUTURE by being the strongest political wind at his back. Is Romney a conservative ideologue? No. Is Romney a principled fighter? No, but neither are the wimpy moderates who originally supported him. Will he be influenced by the loudest voices in the room? MOST CERTAINLY.

The lazy way out of this in the next month would be to take our ball, go home, and wait until 2016 for either a better Republican candidate, or a third party to emerge because we didn’t nominate Ronald Reagan or someone with our identical political or, for some, religious views (the latter, which would be doomed to failure against the Democratic/Socialist party juggernaut). But then none of the candidates in the Republican primary this year were Reagan, and as Christians, we believe that no two people view God exactly the same way (otherwise we could never have a “personal” relationship with Him).

There is no time like the present and despite the differences of even many of us in the constitutional conservative movement, we have fought too long and come too far to either walk away from or go lukewarm on the only person who has a legitimate chance to unseat the Godless communist currently occupying the White House who is now only one month–one election–away from indelibly enshrining Obamacare into our law and culture.

Electing Romney won’t give us the easy answer we want, but as a minimum it will buy us time. The bonus is that if WE stay strong and continue to take the fight to the Republican establishment, we may end up with a “friend” in the White House, but the ball will clearly still be in OUR court. Apparently, Erick Erickson of Red State agrees:
